Supervisor Burke was born and raised in South L.A.
        20th Street Elementary School.
        32nd Street Elementary School.
        John Adams Junior High School.

1949

Graduated from Manual Arts High School.

1949

Enrolled at UC Berkeley.

1951

Transferred to UCLA in junior year.

1953

Received bachelor of arts degree from University of California (UCLA).

First African-American woman admitted to USC’s School of Law.

1956

Received juris doctorate from the University of Southern California (USC) School of Law.

1965

Staff Attorney for McCone Commission.

1966-1972

California state assemblywoman, Assembly District 63.

1972-1978

First African-American woman elected to the U.S. Congress from California. Represented the 37th District.

1972

Vice chair of the Democratic National Convention in Miami.

1972

Member of the House Select Committee on Assassinations.

1973

First member of Congress to give birth while in office.

1979-1980

Appointed by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. as first African-American to serve as Los Angeles County supervisor. Represented the Fourth District.

1984

Vice chair of the U.S. Olympics Organizing Committee.

1992-Present

First African-American elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Represented the Second District.

1993-Present

Board member of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

Advocate for development of the Crenshaw Corridor, light and heavy rail systems.

1993/94

Chair of the Board of Supervisors.

1995

Spearheaded the Kenneth Hahn Park expansion, inclusive of Little League baseball fields.

1996

Established the Second District Education and Policy Foundation that awards scholarships to deserving local students.

1996

Selected “America’s 200 Future Leaders” by Time Magazine.

Selected “Woman of the Year” by the Los Angeles Times.

Selected “Alumni of the Year” by UCLA.

1997

Established a County website to list available contracts for small businesses and provided ongoing services to small businesses.

1997/98

Chair of the Board of Supervisors.

2001

Founded and funded the Women’s Health Center at the Hubert H. Humphrey Comprehensive Health Center.

Saved Los Angeles County million dollars by changing the salary structure of child psychiatrists, enabling the county to hire permanent employees rather out-of-state contractors.

2002

Chair of First 5 LA.

2002/03

Chair of the Board of Supervisors.

2006

Spearheaded Kenneth Hahn Park expansion.

Established and funded the Women’s Center of Excellence at King /Drew Medical Center.

Coordinated nursing programs with South L.A. colleges to enhance the county nursing workforce.

Enabled Oasis Clinic to move out of a trailer – funding new HIV/AIDS Oasis Clinic at King/Drew Medical Center.

2006/07

Chair of the L.A. County Children’s Planning Council—the most influential cross-system vehicle advocating reform of children’s service systems in a major U.S. metropolitan area.

2007

Advocate for environmental issues such as “Lights Out L.A.,” the use of paper rather than plastic bags, and the observance of America Recycle Day in Los Angeles County.

2007

Spearheaded an effort in Los Angeles County for a voluntary program for restaurants to eliminate trans fat.

Directed the Department of Health Services and the Hammes Company to find solutions and identify a provider to re-open “inpatient” services at King/Drew Medical Center.

Broke ground to build the new surgery center at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

2007/08

Chair of the Board of Supervisors.

Working with Los Angeles County’s new chief executive officer to adopt a plan to identify funding for all County hospitals to meet state-mandated earthquake standards.

2008

Chair of First 5 LA.
